Tracy Hellman
Head Coach
In his dual role as Augustana’s head coach for both men’s and women’s cross country and track and field, Tracy Hellman has guided the programs to national prominence.
In 2010-11, the men finished fourth in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Division II Program of the Year standings. The women ranked fifth. In both cases, Augustana was the highest ranked school from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The South Dakota Sportswriters’ Association voted Hellman the 2010 College Women’s Coach of the Year after the Vikings won their third straight NSIC cross country championship. Hellman has scored a plethora of coaching awards as he begins his 11th season at the helm of the cross country programs and the 12th with the track and field teams.
Cross Country
Since joining the NSIC, Augustana cross country teams have had a remarkable record of success. In 2010, both the men and women won NSIC team and individual championships, and Hellman was named men’s coach of the year. The women finished third at the Central Region Championships, while the men were fourth. Both teams advanced to nationals, where the men were sixth and the women seventh. The women have won three-straight conference crowns, while the men have claimed the last two. Hellman led the Augustana women’s cross country team to the school's first NSIC title in 2008, earning conference coach of the year honors. After a runner-up finish in region competition, Hellman and the Vikings ran to a fifth-place national finish--the highest in school history.
Indoor Track & Field
Augustana’s cross country success carried over to the 2011 indoor season with both the men and women capturing runner-up honors at the NSIC Championship. The Vikings claimed eight conference individual titles, and 18 members of the teams were designated All-NSIC. Eight indoor school records were established and both squads were nationally ranked throughout the season. Aduo Omot, one of 11 Vikings to earn All-America recognition, was the national 800-meter indoor champion. Hellman was named NSIC coach of the year in 2010 after the women won their first-ever conference track championship. He was voted North Central Conference coach of the year in 2006 following the Vikings’ third-place finish at the NCC indoor track and field championships.
Outdoor Track & Field
The 2011 outdoor season ranks as the most productive in Augustana history. The women won the NSIC championship, the first outdoor title in the program’s history and the first outdoor crown for Augustana since 1942. The Vikings won three events at the prestigious Drake Relays, including a school and South Dakota collegiate record for the women’s distance medley relay. The Vikings won eight individual titles at the NSIC meet and landed a dozen All-NSIC berths. Runa Falch was chosen NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year. Hellman was named NSIC and Central Region Women’s coach of the year as the Vikings sent seven student-athletes to the NCAA Championships. Two Vikings won national championships, Falch in the 1,500 and Omot in the 800. In all, six school records were set throughout the campaign.
Forty of Hellman’s student-athletes have received All-America recognition in track and field/cross country. He has mentored four national champions and his teams have accounted for 40 school records. He has been named NSIC coach of the year eight times and U.S. Track Coaches Association coach of the year twice.
Before coming to Augustana, Hellman was an assistant track and field and cross country coach at Humboldt State in Arcata Calif. While at HSU, the men’s team won the Pac-West Conference cross country meet title twice and finished 11th place in the 1998 Division II National Cross Country Championship.
